The city of Castlegar is considered the commercial center of activity within the Kootney Region. The area in and around the city is home to approximately 16,000 people, whilst the city alone is home to just 7,500 individuals. Key business and community leaders in the year 2002, started to develop and identify some opportunities for possible investment. The fields which were identified, include: Tourism and Hospitality, Call Centre, Value-Added Wood Products, High Technology, Microbrewery, and High Energy-Dependent Trade.

The city of Castlegar provides numerous outdoor and physical activities which families can do for fun. Amongst these comprise: Skiing and Snowboarding, Day Hiking, Backpacking, Kayaking, Fishing, Boating, Golfing, and Family Camping. For serious climbers, they can take advantage of the Kootenay Crag, Slocan Bluffs, Mount Gimli, and Hall Siding Bluffs because these are the best places to climb at. The Slocan Bluffs is among the popular places that climbers go to mostly for sports climbing, with cracks and face climbs for a wide range of levels. It also has a lake that is a great place to go to after a climb. The Kootenay Crag can be accessed through bike or boat. The climb has a range from 5.11 to 5.13. Mount Gimli is located in the Valhalla Provincial Park. It has a good range of 5.9 with 7.8 pitches. It likewise has a 3rd class descent with four to seven hours of climb time. Hall Sliding Bluffs is just off the highway between Nelson and Yimr. It presently has twelve challenging routes to select from.

The region likewise boasts of recreational trails which provide views of dams, rivers, rock slides, wildlife, highways, mountains and communities. These trails follow a river valley that looks down onto the Kootenay River and Brilliant Dam. The trails consist of: Overlook, Elk Cutoff, Dove Hill, and Skattebo Reach trails.
