Santa Ana City is the County seat of Orange County. It has an overall population of 328,000 and a land area approximately 27.2 square miles. It is presently the financial and government centre of the county, but it competes with Irvine for the lead in commercial expansion.

Amongst the main objectives of the city is to revive downtown. Based from the California State Fullerton's Grand Centre Art Center, the city created the Santa Ana Artists Village, that is home to the Bower's Museum and the Old County Courthouse..

The downtown area is a perfect mix between commercial and residential communities. There are historic houses within the area dating back to the late 1800's. The city is taking good care to be able to preserve the cities historic monuments while the downtown area develops.

The economy in Santa Ana is largely dependent on technology. The city is in a position to direct the rest of Southern California into an information age. Santa Ana ranks third in the state of California for the amount of office space accessible downtown, coming in behind Los Angeles and San Francisco. They ranked 13th for the largest number of businesses established and have the fourteenth largest consumer market in the country.

Initially, the financial system in the area around Santa Ana was the numerous agricultural trades. Then again, with Huges, Northrop and several aerospace businesses became really prominent right after the end of WWII. Once the University of California was built in Irvine in the mid 60's, science based trades prospered and developed. Santa Ana is considered the top high-tech area within Southern California. Among the "Fast Fifty" companies, Santa Ana has twenty one of them established within the city limits.

The city strongly supports small businesses, which is amongst the reasons the city's financial system is so strong. Almost a quarter of these smaller companies are owned by the minority. Because of the cities strong economic base, it is able to outperform several other cities within California during difficult economic times.

Within Orange County, there have been some companies which have been founded, like for instance Gotcha, St. John Dritts and Roxy.
