Modesto (population 201,165) is a city within the U.S. state of California. It is situated within Stanislaus County, for which it serves as the county seat. Modesto is located within the northern part of California, 148 km east of San Francisco. Fertile agricultural land surrounds this modest-sized city. Stanislaus County ranks 6th in farm production amongst California counties, grossing over $2 billion each and every year in agricultural products. Area farmers make mostly milk, almonds, chickens, cattle and walnuts.

Modesto was established in 1870. It was a train stop on the route between Sacramento and Los Angeles. Folklore says that the city was named Modesto after William C. Ralston, a financier in the state of California refused to have the city named after him, and a Spanish-speaking railroad worker declared that Ralston was very modest - "Muy modesto" in Spanish.

Modesto region's fertile farmland comprises a lot of wineries, the most well known of which is E & J Gallo. The Gallo Glass Company is a significant local employer, providing jobs in its large bottle manufacturing operation. The people of Modesto are also working at steel plants and food canneries. Food processing facilities, such as the Foster farms poultry plant and Blue Diamond Growers almond factory, are significant employers. At least 20 percent of the city's labor force commutes to nearby counties for jobs.

Besides agriculture related industries, major sectors are education, management, professional and related occupations, food and accommodation services, healthcare, social assistance and light manufacturing.

The city of Modesto has a strong culture and arts sector. Among local arts organizations is the Central West ballet, Gallo Center for the Arts, The Modesto Symphony, The State Theatre and The Townsend Opera Players. Local attractions comprise The McHenry Mansion, The Castle Air Museum and The Great Valley Museum.

The mild weather of Northern California makes Modesto perfect for year-round outdoor recreation. Watersports like for example boating, houseboating and river rafting are popular here. The region has superb facilities utilized for camping and golfing. Indoor recreational activities are offered free of charge at Beyer High School's big public skate park. Yosemite National Park is less than an hour away.
