The city of Oxnard, that was incorporated during 1903, is presently the biggest city in Ventura County. It runs right along the pacific coastline and is thirty five miles south of Santa Barbara and sixty miles northwest of Los Angeles.

The extremely fertile soil in the area is among the most desirable things about Oxnard. The fertile soil along with the temperate weather gives a long harvest season, making the area of Oxnard really agriculturally rich. Farmers could normally get double, even triple, the amount of crops harvested on the same piece of land each and every year.

Originally, the economy used to be based on oil and agricultural almost exclusively. However, the financial system within Oxnard has grown together with the city. It all started off by farming sugar beets/beans and cattle grazing. Intensive farming followed shortly after. A strange twist was the shift from intensive farming to working in the defence industry. Today, the city is focusing on developing industrial, housing and commercial opportunities. Oxnard prides itself on keeping an even balance between honouring their agricultural background but still progressing further into the areas of technology and business.

Oxnard has gone through a population boom in the past fifty years. Even if this has provided challenges to the government, it has also been a blessing since it has created great opportunities for young entrepreneurs to start up companies.

Within the city, the top employers are in biotechnology, duplicating and packaging videocassettes, health insurance, mortgage lending, education, and telephone services and equipment. The federal, local and state governments employ a large percentage of the residents. Due to its ideal location close to Highway 101, the city is attracting lots of high-technology companies. The Port of Hueneme, that unloads, sends and loads cars and fruit abroad, is really essential to the economy. Point Mugu and Port Hueneme are also home to a large portion of the United States Navy.
