The city of Palmdale is situated in the north-central part of Los Angeles County. The city was founded in the year 1962 and ever since then now hosts a population of 152,622. Voters agreed to make the city into a Charter City in November of the year 2009. The Gabriel Mountain Range divides Palmdale from Los Angeles.

Palmdale is currently the sixth largest city within the Los Angeles County and has been ranked as among the top 25 fastest growing cities within California. The city limits stretch almost 104.57 square miles, making it amongst the largest cities within the United States or the biggest "Desert City." It is among the really few larger cities which are not served by a highway or interstate freeway.

Palmdale has long considered itself to be the "Aerospace Capital of the United States." It is by far the most prosperous industry within the area, although manufacturing plants are beginning to develop due to special tax breaks offered by the government as well as the close proximity to the Palmdale Airport.

The main location of the Aerospace industry within the city is the USAF Plant 42, where all the final assembly, research, development, servicing/modifications and test flights happen. The B-2 Spirit, F-35 Lightning II, F-117 Nighthawk, Lockheed L-1011 Tristar, the SR-71 Blackbird, X-15 and the Space Shuttle are just amongst the planes which were developed at the centre. The research and completed products made here are used by airlines and air forces internationally along with NASA.

Located within the city are major operations for Boeing, Lockheed Martin (Skunk Works) and Northrop Grumman. The USAF Plant 42, a previous Boeing hanger is amongst the biggest buildings within the globe. It is owned by the Los Angeles World Airport.
