Located in the Contra Costa County, Richmond is close to the San Francisco Bay Area. Incorporated on August 7, 1905, the city of Richmond has been slowly moving from a heavy industry based economy towards one which concentrates on commercial and service industries. San Pablo, along with the unincorporated sections of North Richmond, Rich Eastmond Heights and El Sobrante, are surrounded by the Richmond's city limits. The city is currently the 56th biggest in the state with a population which was about 103,468 in the year 2006. Richmond is the largest city in the country who has a green party mayor.

During 2010, the city was ranked the 6th most dangerous city in the United States. The core of the city sees the majority of the crime, while the rest of the city is rather safe. The police department admits that the city has had a chronic violent crime rate for a lot of years.

There are several unique businesses that have been located within Richmond. The Giant Powder Company, which made dynamite and gunpowder, closed down during the year 1960. Point Molate was the site of the last active whaling station within the county, that was closed in 1971. The Prohibition during 1919 caused Winehaven, amongst the world's biggest wineries, to close down.

Throughout WWII, the economy was mostly supported by industrial businesses, particularly shipbuilding. Nevertheless, as time has passed, it has become a major seaport and ships more than twenty six million tons of goods per year, with the bulk of supplies being oil and petroleum. A major oil refinery, run by Chevron USA, is located within the city and has a capacity of 15 million barrels.

Two of the largest companies within the city are the Social Security Administration, that employs more than 1000 people, and the Kaiser Pemanente's Richmond Medical Center Hospital, that is situated within downtown Richmond. A video game animation studio, Treeskunk Production, is situated downtown, as in Bay View recording studio, where artists such as Smash Mouth record their hit records. Galaxy Desserts is likewise operated and run in Richmond.

Vetrazzo is a green company located in the former Ford Assembly Plant which takes old traffic lights and recycled beer bottles and makes superb glass countertops. It has won numerous awards for its green initiatives.
