Fairfield is the county seat of Solano County and hosts a population of approximately 110,000 people. It is situated within Northern California on the north-eastern part of San Francisco Bay. The city has a very convenient central location; with both Sacramento and San Francisco being about 38 miles away. Fairfield was named by Robert H. Waterman, a clippership captain, in 1859 after his hometown in Fairfield, Connecticut. Less then eighteen miles away from Fairfield is Napa Valley and about twenty four miles away is Oakland. The Benicia Bridge and the Carquinez Bridge are also located nearby. (15 and 13 miles, respectively) Fairfield shares a border with Suisun city. Some cities within a reasonable travel distance are Vacaville, Benicia, Napa, and Vallejo.

Located due south of Fairfield is Suisun Bay and San Pablo Bay is located to the southwest. The biggest West Coast saltwater marsh is located Suisan Bay known as the Suisun Marsh. In the east is the Sacramento Valley.

The economy of Fairfield is somewhat diverse, with many industries comprising government, healthcare, manufacturing, retail, commercial and professional construction sectors. Jelly Belly and Clorox are among a few of the popular companies situated here. Anheuser-Busch has a Budweiser brewery located here, and Fairfield is also the home of the Travis Air Force Base.

According to the 2008 GDP of the Vallejo-Fairfield area was 13,340 million dollars. After the adjustment of inflation, the right GDP was thought to be closer to $10,151 million.

Fairfield's largest industry is currently construction, as this industry produces 5.8% of the economic output ($776 million). The second and third largest industries are wholesale trade () and Financial/Insurance ($467 million).
