Mesa, Arizona is a bedroom community of the larger city of Phoenix. It is situated within county of Maricopa and is the third-biggest city within Arizona State following Phoenix and the city of Tucson. Mesa's population is about 439,000 as of 2010, giving it Arizona's highest concentration of suburban population. Mesa is located thirty two kilometers east of Phoenix. Mesa is bordered by the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community on the north, Gilbert and Chandler on the south, Apache Junction on the east and Tempe on the west.

The area of Mesa was settled over 2,000 years ago by the remarkable Hohokam people. The Hohokam built the biggest and most extensive canal systems found in the pre-contact North America. Some extended 26 km across the Sonoran Desert to deliver water for agricultural purposes. Some were as much as 27 m wide at their head gates. By A.D. 1100 an area of desert measuring approximately 450 km2 was capable of yielding crops thanks to irrigation. Many of these canals are still in use nowadays.

Now, the city of Mesa is a successful industrial area, home to the Polytechnic campus of Arizona State University and businesses like for instance AT&T and Boeing.
