The city of Scottsdale is located in the eastern portion of Maricopa, Arizona in the USA. The city is situated right next to Phoenix. The population was about 217,385 based on the U.S. Census Bureau. The downtown region of Scottsdale has been described by the New York Times as "a desert version of Miami's South Beach." It has been described as having a lively hotel scene and is home to a lot of late night partying.

The city of Scottsdale is bordered to the south by Tempe, towards the north by Carefree and to the east by the Salt River Pima Maricopa Indian Community and Fountain Hills and to the west by Paradise Valley and Phoenix. The city is found in the Salt River Valley or the "Valley of the Sun". It lies in the northern area of the Sonoran Desert. The McDowell Mountain Range is found immediately to the northeast and the east of Scottsdale.

Roughly 39% of the city's workforce is accounted for by the Scottsdale tourism business, which is the main employer. There are more than 7.5 million tourists who travel through the city of Scottsdale on a yearly basis and they contribute more than $3.1 billion dollars to the economy. The city of Scottsdale has more than 15,000 hotel rooms at its more than 70 hotels and resorts.

The city of Scottsdale comes in third after Las Vegas and New York City as having the most AAA Five Diamond resorts and hotels within the United States. The AAA awarded 5 particular properties within Scottsdale with the highest honor during the year 2008. These properties were the Canyon Suites, the Fairmont Princess Resort and Spa, the Troon North, the Scottsdale Camelback Inn and the Four Seasons Resorts Scottsdale.

The city of Scottsdale has a lot of sunshine and is known for its year round warm climate. These are among the main features of Scottsdale's tourism. There are lots of tourists in wintertime who come from as far away as Canada, the northeast and the Midwest. When these winter travelers come and stay for long term visits, they are locally referred to as "snowbirds." Often, these tourists normally buy second homes within the area as they practice this migration routine on an annual basis.

Over the last few years the area has grown considerably with a lot of upscale restaurants, art galleries and high end nightlife. There is many luxury shopping destinations too making the region a famous travel site for the more style conscious travelers.

Within Scottsdale, the aviation business has also grown. The Scottsdale Airport, constructed in the 1960's is currently amongst the countries busiest single runways airports. The majority of all the operations are corporate or general aviation since there is no commercial air service.
