Gilbert is a town situated within Maricopa County, Arizona. The community is in the Phoenix metropolitan area and is situated just southeast of Phoenix. The city of Gilbert encompasses approximately 197 km2 or 76 square miles. It has made the rapid transformation in recent years from being a community based on agriculture to a suburban centre that is economically diverse.

The city of Gilbert has increased it population quite significantly in the past couple of decades. The 1980 population of the city of Gilbert was 5,717 residents, growing to a huge 208,453 residents, according to 2010 census numbers. The community has become a very affluent and very educated area supporting high-wage jobs in health services and life science, clean and renewable energy and high technology. The city of Gilbert has likewise developed into the regional and corporate offices and headquarters in many advanced business services.

The city of Gilbert owes its beginning to William "Bobby" Gilbert. He provided land during 1902 to the Arizona Eastern Railway. This allowed them to build a rail line between Phoenix and Florence Arizona. In 1912, due to the actions of the forces of Pancho Villa, many Mormans who had fled the Morman colonies in Mexico decided to settle within the city of Gilbert. In the year 1915, they started holding church meetings at the Gilbert Elementary School and by the year 1918 they had organized themselves to become the Gilbert Ward.

Throughout much of the early 20th century, the city of Gilbert was known as the "Hay Capital of the World". The economy of the city has continued to depend on agriculture in recent years. On par with the population growth in the town, Gilbert has rapidly transitioned to its present status as being a modern suburb in the Phoenix Metropolitan Area.

The city of Gilbert hosts the annual "Gilbert Days" celebration every year in late November. This festival spans 3 days which observes the paving of Gilbert Road. Other famous events in the city consist of the Raparian Institute, the Hale Centre Theatre, Cave Creek, Deer Valley Rock Art Centre, Freestone Park, the Gilbert Historical Museum and the Heritage District.

There are a variety of recreational facilities within the city like for example 2 municipal swimming pools, 2 community centers and 14 parks. One of the parks has been dedicated as a skateboard park.
