Flagstaff is a city situated within the southwestern part of the United States within the northern area of Arizona. The city is found along the western side of the biggest contiguous Ponderosa Pine forest in the continental United States. It lies close to Colorado Plateau's southwestern edge. The population of the city of Flagstaff was about 60,611 in 2009 and based on statistics for the year 2010, the MSA was recorded with 175,871 inhabitants.

Flagstaff is named after the Ponderosa Pine flagpole that was made by a scouting party from Boston who was referred to as the "Second Boston Party." This was made on July 4, 1876, to celebrate the US Centennial. Flagstaff is the county seat of Coconino County.

Situated just south of the San Francisco Peaks, Flagstaff is near Mount Elden, the highest mountain range in all of Arizona. In Kachina Peaks Wilderness, Humphreys Peak is located, around 10 miles or 16 kilometers north of the city, and it forms the highest point in the state of Arizona at 12,633 feet or 3850 meters.

The economy in Flagstaff was initially based on ranching industries, lumber and the railroad. The city of Flagstaff currently remains a vital distribution center for businesses such as Walgreens, Purina PetCare and Nestle. Flagstaff is also home to the United States Naval Observatory, Lowell Observatory and the USA Geological Survey Flagstaff Station as well as Northern Arizona University. There is a strong focus on tourism in Flagstaff due to its nearness to the Arizona Snowbowl, Oak Creek Canyon, the famous Route 66, Grand Canyon National Park and the Meteror Crater. Flagstaff is home to W.L. Gore and Associates, that is part of the medical device manufacturing sector.

Flagstaff's largest employers are the Flagstaff Medical Center, the Northern Arizona University and the Flagstaff Unified School District. Replacing the once main businesses of ranching, railroad and lumber are the present major economic industries of transportation, education, government and tourism. Over 5 million visitors travel through the city on an annual basis as well. There are Various restaurant and hotel chains which are quite successful within the region due to all of the tourism that the Grand Canyon generated. There are 2 historic hotels situated in the downtown area: the Hotel Monte Vista and the Weatherford Hotel.

The city is home to several famous high tech scientific research and development operations such as the United States Naval Observatory Flagstaff Station, referred to as NOFS, the Lowell Observatory, the USGS or United States Geographical Survey's Flagstaff Campus and Northern Arizona University. Lowell Observatory is a popular tourist's center and an active astronomical observatory. They host educational displays and tours. They provide a distributed network of small telescopes that all together, provide images of celestial bodies with a lot higher resolutions than produced by any other single telescope. Some of the present research is involved in observations of near-Earth phenomena including asteroids and comets.
