Mobile is the original home of the Mardi Gras. The name "Mobile" has its roots in the name of the Maubilla Indians, who originally lived in the area. Mobile is called the "Azalea Capital of the World" due to its displays of numerous varieties of azaleas.

During the year 1702, the city of Mobile was established and was later incorporated as a city in 1819. The city of Mobile came under various changes of rule during the intervening years. At first, the establishment ruled as the capital of French Louisiana until the British assumed control during the year 1763. During the American Revolution, the Spanish seized Mobile, and during the 1812 war, the United States took over. In the Civil War, Mobile was part of the Confederacy and survived a Union Naval forces blockade. For 50 years, the city's proximity near a large international seaport increased its fortunes. Shipping cotton was its main industry. Nowadays the local economy is dominated by the aerospace, chemical, petroleum and maritime businesses. Tourism is also a significant business.

Mobile has a strong economic base in the sectors of research and medicine, aerospace, retail trade, construction and manufacturing. Mobile companies make aircraft, engines, paper and wood pulp, paint, chemicals, cement, aluminum, pumps, rayon fibers and ship-related stuff.
