Juneau is the capital of Alaska State. It is a unified municipality located on the Gastineau Channel within the Alaska Panhandle. In 1970, the Borough and City of Juneau was created when the city of Juneau, the city of Douglas and the Greater Juneau Borough amalgamated to form a home rule municipality. The current Borough and City population is 31,275.
The land area of Juneau is almost as big as the states of Delaware and Rhode island combined. Juneau's downtown sits at sea level at the base of Mount Juneau. Douglas Island is located across the channel.
The city of Juneau went through three name changes. It was known as Rockwell and then Harrisburg, after two gold prospectors, and after that was renamed Juneau after another prospector, Joe Juneau. The area's native people, the Tlingit, referred to the region Dz
