This catastrophic overnight flood triggered the creation of the Chena River Lakes Flood Control Project. A 13 km spillway and 15 m dam were constructed in the Chena River. The reason for the project was to be able to divert the Chena upstream from Fairbanks City into the Tanana River, and protect the city of Fairbanks from a future flood.
