The city of Nashville, Tennessee is the state capital and also serves as the county seat of Davidson County. The city is located in the Southeastern United States along the Cumberland River. The City of Nashville has earned its reputation as a center for the music industry. There are also many colleges and universities located there. It is the second biggest city in Tennessee, aside from Memphis.

The consolidated city-county government in the City of Nashville covers all of Nashville in addition to smaller municipalities in a two-tier system. With more than 1.5 million inhabitants, it is the biggest Metropolitan Statistical Area within Tennessee. The region is a center for health care, banking, publishing and transportation.

The region was initially settled by a group of Wataugans, frontier settlers during the year 1779. The Watauguns set up their very own autonomous government and called the settlement Fort Nashborough to honor Francis Nash, who was an American Revolutionary War Hero. Nashville quickly grew in importance because of its port on the river, and later its accessibility via railway. Nashville was incorporated as a city during 1806 and became the county seat. During 1843 it was named state capital.

Nashville's cultural life benefits from the extensive university community. The university community has been extremely influential not just in Nashville, but nationally. The Agrarians and the fugitives were two groups of poets and literary scholars who were connected with Vanderbilt University in the early 20th century and had a major effect on culture.

Tourism is an essential industry, particularly due to Nashville's Civil War history. Fort Nashborough, a reconstruction of the original settlement, and Fort Negley, a semi-restored Civil War battle fort, are two popular tourist sites. The City of Nashville is the site of a full-scale replica of the Greek Parthenon. Historic architecture consists of the Tennessee State Capitol buildings and The Hermitage, an historic presidential home open to the public.

Known as "Music City", the City of Nashville is well-known for its vibrant music scene. A main venue is the Tennessee Performing Arts Center. Cultural organizations include the Nashville Opera, the Tennessee Repertory Theater, the Music City Drum and Bugle Corps and the Nashville Ballet. The symphony has its head office within the Schermerhorn Symphony Center.
