The city of Jersey City, New Jersey although it is actually considered part of the New York metropolitan area. Jersey City is located between the Upper New York Bay and Newark Bay, the Hudson River and the Hackensack River. Jersey City is the seat of Hudson County within the state of New Jersey. Based on the 2010 Census, the population of Jersey City was approximately 247,600. It placed as the state's 2nd largest city.

As a port of entry with significant rail connections and 11 miles or 18 km of sea front, Jersey City is an important transportation station as well as a distribution and manufacturing center for the Port of New Jersey and the Port of New York. The city has grown to become among the biggest downtown areas within the US since some service industries have played a prominent role in the sea front real estate redevelopment.

The area that comprises Jersey City was first explored during 1609 by Henry Hudson, an English navigator who was funded by the Dutch East India Company. In 1630, a permanent settlement was pioneered there by an agent of the Dutch West India Company referred to as Michael Pauw. Even today, Jersey City maintains its early influence with an abundance of streets with Dutch names throughout the city.

The original name of the area went by the Paulus Hook, which was a name that came from Michael Paulusen. He served as amongst the states early governors. The city was first incorporated as Jersey City in 1820. During that time it was still part of the town referred to as Bergen. During the year 1838, it was reincorporated and during that time, the city became independent and given its present name of Jersey City. The population tremendously grew between 1860 and 1870, more than four times. The economic strength of the region was because of the consolidation of different municipalities into Jersey City along with the emerging factories.

The city was the site of a 1916 explosion. It was set off by German saboteurs, who exploded some railway cars into the Black Tom island of Jersey City. These explosions resulted in loss of property projected in the millions. Jersey City had attained a healthy level of prosperity ever since it provided an excellent option for those companies looking to escape the very expensive business costs connected with the city of New York.
