Sault Ste. Marie is a city within the Algoma District of Ontario, Canada. It is situated on the St. Mary's River and is the third biggest city within Northern Ontario after Sudbury and Thunder Bay. Sault Ste. Marie has a population of around 74,948 people.

Originally, the community was founded as a French religious mission. In the French language, "Sault" translates to either "rapids" or "jump." Thus, the entire translation is "Saint Mary's Rapids or Jump Saint Mary's." The word Sault is pronounced in French as "so," and Anglophone inhabitants enunciate it as "soo." Individuals who reside in the region are referred to as "Saultites."

In 1668, a mission was established by French Jesuits. They claimed the region by Simon-Francois Daumont de Saint-Lusson, in the name of Louis XIV of France. Soon after fur trading posts emerged and this was to become amongst the oldest European settlements within Canada.

Sault Ste. Marie City is bounded to the west by Prince Town and by the east by the Garden River and Rankin First Nation reserves. The city is bordered by an unincorporated part of Algoma District towards the north. This includes the local services of Batchawana Bay, Aweres, Searchmont, Peace Tree and Goulais and District.

Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan is situated across the river from its Canadian counterpart. There is an international bridge that connects the two cities. The bridge on the Canadian side connects to Huron Street, while the Michigan side connects on Interstate 75. The shipping traffic in the Great Lakes system bypasses the Saint Mary's Rapids through the American Soo Locks. This is the busiest canal system in the world according to tonnage that passes through it each and every year. The Canadian Sault Ste. Marie Canal is reserved for smaller recreational crafts and tour boats.

Steel-making has been a key economic driver for the city, as the Algoma Steel Company, previously Essar Steel Algoma, is the largest employer in the city. Their main steel plant hires more than 3500 staff. There is an adjacent tube mill is operated by Tenaris and they employ around 553 staff, 440 of those are unionized and 113 are non-unionized. During the 1940s, the chromium and steel operations were of significant importance to the war effort in the USA and Canada. The Chromium Mining and Smelting Corporation as well as the Algoma Steel Corporation were key producers at the time for military transportation and equipment.

Forestry has also been a strong business within the region. St. Mary's Paper, reopened during 2007, under new ownership. The company Flakeboard Ltd. is another company producing wood products. They hire 110 individuals in the community. There is likewise an adjacent melamine factory that creates products utilizing Flakeboard's materials.

OLG or likewise known as the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation has its corporate office situated within the city and is another large business for the city. They have their operations on the waterfront and employ as many as 900 workers within Sault Ste. Marie between the OLG Casino Sault Ste. Marie and the corporate office. At first, the prize centre used to be situated within the city. In the year 2009, it was moved back to Toronto within the York Mills area. The role of the prize centre has diminished slightly in the community. They are still the 4th biggest company within the region, after Essar Steel Algoma, the Sault Area Hospital and the call centre business in those respective orders.
