Pickering is a part of the Greater Toronto Area, and is located in Southern Ontario, Canada. It was founded in 1791 as a part of York County, and its name was derived from Pickering, North Yorkshire in North Yorkshire, England. The first activity of the town was primarily agricultural, with local rivers creating water-power so as to operate local mills. It was integrated during the year 1811 and became a part of the newly-formed County of Ontario during the year 1852. The years that follow saw Pickering Village grow along the Kingston Road near Duffins Creek. It was then separated from the township and was incorporated as a village in the year 1958.

Pickering City recognizes the importance of the arts within the society. Some of its events and activities include Treble in the Park, Artfest, Waterfront Concert Series, and PineRidge Arts Council. Artfest is a real celebration of the arts that helps community artists to show and sell their work to everyone. Waterfront Concert Series provides a variety of performances that range from rock and roll to contemporary pop hits. The PineRidge Arts Council is a non-profit organization that is committed to improve the quality of life within the community through the development, support and involvement in the arts. The Pickering Museum Village is an award-winning museum that consists of fifteen restored heritage buildings. These structures comprise churches, barns, schoolhouses, houses, general store, wood shop, and blacksmith. What's more, the museum even offers programs for schools and the public, like for example education tours, outreach programs, education kit rentals, guest speaker presentations, and public workshops and programs. The museum's education tours re-create the every day life of Pickering Township's settlers from the early pioneer days onward.
