The city of Green Bay is the county seat of Brown County within the State of Wisconsin, within the United States. The city is located at the head of Green Bay which is a sub-basin of Lake Michigan and is found at the Fox River. The city has an elevation of 581 feet or 177 m above sea level. The city of Green Bay is situated 180 km or 112 miles north of the city of Milwaukee. Based on the census of the year 2010, Green Bay had a population of approximately 104,000. There is a Town of Green Bay that is situated a few miles northeast of the city. The city of Green Bay is the 3rd largest city within Wisconsin State, after Milwaukee and Madison. Additionally, it is the third biggest city on the west shore of Lake Michigan, coming in after Chicago and Milwaukee.
Green Bay is the principal city in the Green Bay Metropolitan Statistical Area, an area which covers the counties of Brown, Kewaunee and Oconto. The region along the Fox River where it empties into Green Bay became a natural stopping place for the woodland Indian tribes, French voyagers, Jesuit missionaries and fur trappers as far back as the 17th century.
