The city of Green Bay is the county seat of Brown County within the State of Wisconsin, within the United States. The city is located at the head of Green Bay which is a sub-basin of Lake Michigan and is found at the Fox River. The city has an elevation of 581 feet or 177 m above sea level. The city of Green Bay is situated 180 km or 112 miles north of the city of Milwaukee. Based on the census of the year 2010, Green Bay had a population of approximately 104,000. There is a Town of Green Bay that is situated a few miles northeast of the city. The city of Green Bay is the 3rd largest city within Wisconsin State, after Milwaukee and Madison. Additionally, it is the third biggest city on the west shore of Lake Michigan, coming in after Chicago and Milwaukee.

Green Bay is the principal city in the Green Bay Metropolitan Statistical Area, an area which covers the counties of Brown, Kewaunee and Oconto. Within the 2000 census, this area had a total population of 282,599. The Green Bay Metropolitan Area had a population count of roughly 306,200 based on the 2010 census.

The region along the Fox River where it empties into Green Bay became a natural stopping place for the woodland Indian tribes, French voyagers, Jesuit missionaries and fur trappers as far back as the 17th century. In the year 1634, this are became Wisconsin's very first settlement, 14 years after the Pilgrims landed at Plymouth Rock.

Originally the French settled within the area prior to being driven out by the British during the year 1763. The British retained it as a stronghold until the war of the year 1812. This region was a major fur trading center. The fur trading business had given way to lumbering by the time Wisconsin acquired its statehood in the year 1848. In the year 1895, the very first paper mill was built. This established a staple industry that is currently still a strong part of the economy.

The borough of Green Bay was formed during the year 1838 and later consolidated along with Fort Howard during 1895 to make the City of Green Bay. The city's meat packing trade of the 1920s provided a name for the local football team who was referred to as the Green Bay Packers. Eventually, they became 1 of 2 charter teams of the NFL or also called National Football League.
