The town of Hamilton was created by George Hamilton, the son of Robert Hamilton, a Queenston founder and entrepreneur. George Hamilton bought farm holdings of James Durand, the local Member of the British Legislative Assembly after the War of 1812. Initially, the town was not Gore District's most influential centre, but as the city developed, more and more famous structures were built, especially in the 19th century. During 2001, Hamilton City was formed from the amalgamation of the Regional Municipality of Hamilton-Wentworth and its six municipalities: Hamilton, Ancaster, Dundas, Flamborough, Stoney Creek and Glanbrook.

The city of Hamilton love its sports. It is home the Canadian Football Hall of Fame and Museum, and has played host to the prestigious Canadian Open golf championships four times. The local team in the city is the Ti-Cats or the Tiger-Cats Football team, who have played within Hamilton City for more than one hundred thirty five years. For recreational activities, it's safe to say that Geography defines the city of Hamilton. One thing to watch out for is the Niagara Escarpment, a United Nations World Biosphere which cuts through the middle portion of the city of Hamilton. It is well-known for providing tourists and visitors trails, vistas and waterfalls. Lake Ontario and Hamilton Harbour provides recreational activities like for example parks, trails, and boating. Bird watchers can find the city a haven of wildlife and exotic birds, since Hamilton is among the main places for bird migration. In addition, Hamilton city has about sixty-five waterfalls, which makes it the "City of Waterfalls" within Canada. It is said that the city of Hamilton has much more waterfalls than whichever other city of the same size within the globe.

In Hamilton City, there are numerous attractions to be enjoyed, including the African Lion Safari, that features over one thousand exotic birds, Misumu Bay Play, live animal shows, and a lot more. There is even the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum in the city of hamilton. This museum is home to more than 40 aircrafts from World War II to military jets. Also available within the Heritage Museum are vintage aircraft flying, restaurants, displays, guided tours, gift shops, and many more. The Cathedral of Christ the King is the mother Church of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Hamilton. Christ's Church Cathedral is the church of the Anglican diocese of Niagara, that dates back from the year 1835. Confederation Park offers Wild Waterworks, Lakeland Centre, Lakeland Go-Karts, Hutch's Restaurant, Hamilton Beach trail, Baranga's on the Beach and Hamilton Beach Trail.

Within Ontario, manufacturing is the most essential economic activity. The Toronto-Hamilton region is considered the most highly industrialized region within the nation. Over 60 percent of all the steel in Canada is made by Dofasco. One more major player in the scene is Stelco, and in the latter part, the United States Steel Corporation. This has made Hamilton the "Steel Capital of Canada." During 2003, the city began making a thirty-year growth management plan which plans to erect a massive industrial park centered all-around Hamilton Airport. The proposal, that is referred to as the Airport Employment Growth District, is being primed to be the solution to the shortage of employment lands within the city of Hamilton.
