Spokane is the county seat of Spokane County within Washington State. Situated on the Spokane River within Eastern Washington only 32 km from the Idaho-Washington border, it is the metropolitan center of the region. The Canada-U.S. border lies 180 km to the north.

Spokane started as a trading post in 1810 with the establishment of the North West Company's Spokane House. The settlement was the center of the fur trade between the Cascades and the Rockies. David Thompson was the first to explore the area. When silver and gold were discovered within the Inland Northwest in the late 1800s, the Spokane region boomed. The region is still considered one of the most productive mining districts within North America. Spokane's economy developed from its natural resource base, though in recent years, diversification of the city's economy has brought biotech and high-tech businesses into the area.

The city's economy has been driven mostly by mining and timber industries, though the armed forces of the United States has likewise played a role within the area. A lot of residents of the city are working at the Fairchild Air Force Base. All of the branches of the military are represented in the area. The city's economic development varies from clean technology and aerospace to information technology and digital media. The manufacturing sector focuses on metal fabrication and refinery, finished wood products and food processing. The healthcare industry plays a growing role within the economy. Many businesses are situated here, including the Fortune 1000 Potlatch Corporation. Many wineries, breweries and farms are situated within the region.

Spokane's yearly calendar of activities features several celebrations and festivals. Guests from nearby areas come to the city of Spokane for such events as the springtime Lilac Bloomsday Run, the biggest timed road race within the world. Spectators are in the tens of thousands. Every month of February, the Spokane International Film Festival showcases independent films from all-around the globe.
