Tacoma (population 198,397) is a port city situated on Puget Sound in the state of Washington. It serves as the county seat of Pierce County. Tacoma is 51 km southwest of Seattle and 50 km northeast of Olympia City, Washington's capital city. The city of Tacoma is the third biggest city within Washington State and the business activity center for the South Sound area.

Tacoma got its name from nearby Mount Tahoma, presently known as Mount Rainier, that lies about 93 km southeast. As the site of the Northern Pacific Railroad's western terminus in the late 19th century, the city of Tacoma was dubbed the "City of Destiny." The city of Tacoma was selected as the terminus because of its proximity to Commencement Bay, a deep-water harbor. The idea was to connect the railroad with the shipping vessels utilizing the bay. Today the huge Port of Tacoma is one of the busiest centers of international trade on the Pacific Coast. Now, it is the 6th largest shipping port within North America. The container port activities provide a huge number of jobs for the inhabitants of the region.

Nisqually and Puyallup tribes first made their home along Commencement Bay. The very first European-Americans came to reside in the area because there was huge amounts of natural resources. The very first saw mill was established in 1852, and numerous mills were built during the latter half of the century.

These days, the local economy is made up of many high-tech companies. There are major economic players involved in agriculture and forest products, manufacturing, financial services, healthcare and professional services. Tacoma companies offer automated fingerprints and radio frequency identification, Internet and computer services as well as satellite imaging. The region is a main manufacturer of flower bulbs. In the month of April, the city of Tacoma hosts the yearly Daffodil Parade together with the city's of Puyallup, Sumner and Orting. The city's farmers' Market is held on Thursdays throughout the summer season. Smaller farmers markets are held in South Tacoma and along Sixth Avenue. Fort Nisqually is a tourist spot where visitors could watch historical reenactments. Mount Rainier National Park is less than 2 hours away.
