The town of Gravenhurst is situated within Ontario's Muskoka Region, almost 15 kilometres south of the city of Bracebridge, Ontario. The township is part of "cottage country", an area which takes up a big area within the District of Muskoka. Uniquely nestled between Gull Lake and Lake Muskoka, the community also extends to wonderful Kahshe Lake towards the south and encompasses several other smaller but just as scenic lakes.

The city of Gravenhurst was initially referred to as McCabes Bay and then was later known as Sawdust City. Gravenhurst was named after a village in England which is mentioned in Washington Irving's Bracebridge Hall.

In the 1850s, Gravenhurt's economic grew after the construction of colonization road. It wasn't until the 1860's that steamboating began on the Muskoka lakes. The township is situated strategically at Toronto's northern terminus, Simcoe and Muskoka Junction Railway. The township is positioned as the "Gateway to Muskoka".

The city now has around 11,000 or more permanent people, with an influx of seasonal individuals of approximately the same size coming through the city each and every year to enjoy the several attractions, hiking and biking trails, beaches, parks, heritage sites and culinary, cultural and artistic pursuits.

Muskoka Wharf is an 89 acre celebration of Gravenhurst's varied and unique heritage. Completed during the year 2005 this particular site provides great dining, shopping, heritage and history and is home to some of our Community's signature events. Be certain to check out the Farmer's Market from the months of May to October, be a Pirate for a day, watch the sun glint of the wooden boats of our bygone times and buy unique Art and Crafts at Dockside Festival of the Arts.

The Steamship Festival, Pirate Fest, Winter Carnival, Mayor's Tea, Mayor's Walk, Antique and Classic Boat Show, Muskoka In Water Boat Show, Ribfest or the Gull Lake Regatta are amongst the many great events held yearly within Gravenhurst.

The economy of Gravenhurst is mostly dependent upon retail business, which is the biggest sector of the economy employing 18.7% of the workforce. The province averages 11% of its labor force in retail business. The labour force percentages in the Construction industry within Gravenhurst are high too.
