The small city of Elliot Lake is located in Ontario's Algoma District, and is home to around 12,000 residents. Located north of Lake Huron, the city is halfway between Sault Ste Marie and Sudbury.

Before the settlement of the city, an Ojibwa village existed next to the current hospital site on the lake's shore.

During 1955, the city was planned as a village for the mining trade following the discovery of uranium within the area. The town was named after a small lake that is located on the northern edge of the city. The first incorporation was as an improvement district. Geologist Franc Joubin and American financier Joseph Hirshhorn were vital in its founding. The major mining businesses were Denison Mines and Rio Algom. The population has varied with several boom-and-bust cycles from the 1950s to the 1990s, from a high of over 26,000 to a low of around 6,600.

Situated on the Canadian Shield, the city is bounded by dense forest, muskeg swamps, numerous lakes, winding rivers, and hills of Precambrian bedrock. The local forests are mixed coniferous and deciduous, with colourful displays during the autumn.

The area's local wildlife includes moose, white-tailed Deer, beaver, American Black Bear, loon, muskrat, otter, Canada Goose, and lynx, to name some. The many fish species include speckled trout, lake trout, rainbow trout, smallmouth bass, sturgeon and pickerel (walleye).

Laurentian University established the Elliot Lake Research Field Station in the latter part of the year 1990, to investigate the areas environmental radioactivity.

Local festivals include the Heritage Weekend, Jewel in the Wilderness and the Elliot Lake Arts on the Trail festival.

Denison House is a hotel and convention center situated at the former corporate lodge of Denison Mines, and the Elliot Lake Mining and Nuclear Museum. A couple of community monuments, the Uranium Atom Monument downtown and the Miners Memorial Monument on Horne Lake, are also found within the city, in addition to a scenic lookout at the previous fire tower.

The Deer Trail Touring Route is a 120 kilometre or 75 mile triangular route stretches around the City and holds countless incredible views for all tourists. The Deer Trail promises some of the most gorgeous, unspoiled landscapes of the north and hosts various outdoor recreational activities year round. Whether you are interested in conoeing, driving, cycling, hiking, skiing, backpacking, rock hounding, nature studies or swimming, the Deer Trail has more than you need. Crown land campgrounds and rustic lodges are located all over the area and provide a fantastic base for all outdoor sports and recreations.
