The city of McAllen, Texas is situated almost 5 miles from the Mexican border within the Rio Grande Valley. West Texas and the Valley have been connected through Route 83. Other main highways which serve the area are the Texas State Highway 107 and US Route 281. The nearest airport to McAllen City is the Miller International Airport, which provides flights to Houston City and Dallas, and several other places within the region.

The city was initially established by John McAllen as West McAllen during 1904. Another group of developers established East McAllen shortly after and they joined together during 1911 when McAllen City was incorporated. The Free Trade Zone that was implicated in the 1970's led to the quick growth of industrial manufacturing and trade. More jobs were created in the 1990's when the North American Free Trade Agreement passed. The city of McAllen has become home to a few national businesses throughout the last three decades and is considered the regional leader in government and commerce.

The International Museum of Art and Science within the city of McAllen is among the most fascinating facilities within the city. There are many different exhibits which are held annually in the city of McAllen, including in the North Gallery, a Mexican arts and crafts exhibit, and a long term exhibit of dinosaur tracts at the Earth Science Gallery, which likewise has a working meteorological display. Located at the Museum of South Texas History are numerous artifacts and exhibits cataloging the complete history of Southern Texas, including Spanish colonization and exploration, the Mexican War, Rio Grande steamboat era, and early ranching and farming. The Quinta Mazatlan, the McAllen Wing of the World Birding Center, caters to individuals who love nature. Their only objective is to maintain the 1930's adobe estate as well as the native plants and animals from the area. The Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge houses numerous birds, animals, and waterfowl from around the Rio Grande Valley. The Bentsen-Rio Grande State Park provides over 500 acres of woodlands for ambitious campers, picnickers and hikers.

Within the Rio Grande Valley, there are three regional sports teams located here. The Edinburg Coyotes are an independent minor league baseball team based out of Edinburg. From Hidalgo comes a professional ice hockey team, the Rio Grande Killer Bees. Likewise from Hidalgo are the Rio Grande Valley Dorados, that is a professional football team.
