The north-central Texas city of Wichita Falls is located approximately 120 miles northwest of the city of Dallas. The border to Oklahoma is just 15 miles north of the city. The city is serviced by lots of highways, such as the Texas State Highways 240 and 79, the Interstate I-44 and Routes 281, 287, 82 and 277. It is considered the primary transportation centre of North Texas and is the county seat of Wichita County.
During the mid-1800's, the city of Wichita Falls was first established. The arrival of the first trail in the year 1882, helped to bring in an influx of settlers to the region. Shortly after, a general store and a lumberyard were constructed. The arrival of more railroads stimulated the economy and Wichita Falls soon became a supply and transportation center for southern Oklahoma and northwest Texas. It was incorporated during the year 1889. Oil became more and more prominent and soon became the main economic focus of the city of Wichita Falls. The North Texas Fields were producing 46% of the states oil supply by 1913. The Great Depression slowed the building boom created by the economic prosperity. The Sheppard Field, an Army Air Corps training facility, was established during the year 1941. It later became the Sheppard Air Force Base.
The city was almost destroyed by one of the largest tornadoes in history in April 10, 1979. A lot of houses and business establishments were destroyed. Thankfully the city was able to make a fast recovery. In just a few short years most of the damage was repaired.
There is a large assortment of locations and attractions of interest all around the city of Wichita Falls. The Wichita Falls Railroad Museum, The Kell House Museum, and Wichita Falls Museum and Arts Center are among the notable museums within the region. There are also some performing arts facilities, including the Backdoor Theatre, the Wichita Falls Ballet Theatre, and the Wichita Falls Symphony.
The Wichita Falls Wildcats, is among the cities professional sports teams. The play ice hockey in the North American Hockey League. The Wichita Falls Drillers is one more sports team from the city of Wichita Falls, who have recently won a Minor League Football national championship.
The Sheppard Air Force Base is the biggest employer in the city. Boeing and Lear Sigler Services, Inc., provides services for the base. The Allred Unit, a medium and maximum security prison is another one of the city's largest companies. The economy is primarily made up of educational services, agriculture, healthcare, together with aerospace and defense industries.
There are some major manufacturers with facilities within the city, consisting of PPG, Inc., Alcoa Howmet, WashEx, St. Goban Vertrotex and Magic Aire. Educational services, healthcare, construction, government, accommodation and food services are the top areas of employment in the city of Wichita Falls.
