Baytown, Texas is a flourishing Gulf Coast industrial city. The city of Houston is only 23 miles from Baytown, which is considered part of the Sugar Land-Baytown-Houston metropolitan area. Baytown is bordered by Galveston Bay on the west and south and Cedar Bayou on the east.

From 1822 onwards, some settlements were established in the area, though the city of Baytown wasn't established officially until the year 1947 after a merging of three area cities. The very first offshore drilling operation in the city of Texas was constructed by the Humble Oil and Refining Company in the year 1916. It was also the second to be constructed in the United States. The Baytown Refinery rapidly became amongst Exxon's largest refineries within the globe. It presently remains the biggest refinery in the US. The United States Steel established Texas Works during the year 1970 but was closed some years later.

Several of the major industries in Baytown consist of chemicals, oil refinery, plastics, and rubber. Although there are several big businesses within the city of Baytown, Exxon Chemical, Exxon-Mobil, Bayer, Chevron Phillips and Amoco are the top employers.

The city has separated the economy into three individual industrial areas located outside the city limits but within its extra-territorial jurisdiction. Mainly, these areas support petrochemical and petroleum processing. Bayer, Chevron Phillips and ExxonMobil are the centerpieces of the economy of Baytown. Of all of Bayer's U.S. chemical processing sites, the biggest is the one situated within Bayer Baytown Industrial Park. Also, the Cedar Bayou Chemical Plant is the biggest manufacturing site of Chevron Phillips. The newest manufacturing site is Cedar Crossing Business Park, which has just acquired Samson Controls, Jindal Steel and Power Limited as tenants.

The city's economy is more than just heavy industry. Several main regional distribution centers and warehouses are located there also, like for instance Home Depot and Walmart.

The city's top taxpayers include: CenterPoint Energy, Car Son Bay LP, Camden Property Trust, Continental Airlines, ExxonMobil Company, LCY Elastomers LP, Memorial NW Pavilion Trust, Verizon Southwest, Wal-Mart Stores, Inc., and Valero Marketing & Supply.

The city of Baytown provides numerous opportunities for outdoor activities, like for example duck hunting, sailing, and salt and fresh water fishing. With the assistance of the Gulf winds, summertimes are pleasantly warm. They also help keep the harsh winter weather from entering the city. The Baytown Park Marina is famous for boating and fishing, and provides a boat launch and dock. Various wold flowers, wildlife and birds can be found within the Baytown Nature Center, which is a large acreage featuring wetlands. The Evergreen Point Golf Course will satisfy the golf enthusiasts.

A vast number of parks are littered all around the city of Baytown. The Goose Creek Stream Greenbelt has several opportunities for canoeing as well as numerous bicycle and walking trails. A lighted ball field, along with nature trails and other various facilities, is provided by the Gray Sports Complex.
