The city of Chattanooga is the 4th biggest city in the state of Tennessee after the cities of Memphis, Nashville and Knoxville. The population of the city of Chattanooga is estimated at more than 167,000 inhabitants. The city serves as the seat of Hamilton County and is situated on Nickajack Lake and Chickamauga Lake within southeastern Tennessee. These are both portions of the Tennessee River. Chattanooga is situated 148 miles or 238 km to the northeast of Birmingham, within the state of Alabama, 120 miles or 190 km southwest of the city of Knoxville, 120 miles or 190 km towards the northwest of the city of Atlanta, Georgia, and 217km or 135 miles towards the southeast of the city of Nashville. The city of Chattanooga abuts the border within the state of Georgia. The area is located at the junction of 3 main interstate highways, the I-24, the I-75 and the I-59.

The city of Chattanooga is located in the ridge-and-valley section of the Appalachian Mountains and the Cumberland Plateau, at an elevation of 680 feet or 210 meters above sea level. "Scenic City" is the official nickname for the city of Chattanooga as is it densely bordered by several mountains and ridges.

Prior to the very first European people coming from expeditions led by Spain's Hernando DeSoto, the areas first inhabitants were Native American Indians. During the year 1816, Chattanooga was established at Ross's Landing by John Ross who was Chief of the Cherokee Indians. In 1838, the city utilized the name Chattanooga and the name is taken from Native American origin.
