Brantford's influence in Canada's economy was greatly felt all through the first half of the 20th Century, since it was once ranked 3rd in all Canadian cities that have the highest cash-value of manufactured export goods. The reason for its profitable value lies in its geography. The city is at the deepest navigational point of the Grant River in addition to a railroad center of Southern Ontario. The combination of water and rails helped the city's farming community thrive into a blue-collar industrial city based on farm-based businesses, such as Massey-Harris, Cockshutt Plow Company and Verity Plow. During the later years, Highway 403 was completed in the year 1997. Connected from from Ancaster to Brantford, it was designed to encourage easy access to Hamilton and Toronto, which is another good incentive for companies to put up their businesses in the city. Numerous companies started their businesses here, like Procter and Gamble and Ferrero Spa.
