The city of Edmond, Oklahoma is situated within the central part of the state. It is part of the Oklahoma City metropolitan area, situated in Oklahoma County. It is the sixth largest city within the state of Oklahoma.

The location was chosen as a water and coaling station for steam engines on the Santa Fe rail line. The Santa Fe Railroad extended into Indian Territory in 1887. The site was considered ideal due to its high elevation, which allowed trains to easily accelerate downhill when departing the station in either direction. The station was named after Edmond Burdick, the freight agent. When early settlers arrived, they decided to name the township Edmond. Today the BNSF freight line runs through the same course that the old Santa Fe rail used to take.

During the great Oklahoma land run in the year 1889, the township of Edmond was able to blossom around the homesteads staked around the Santa Fe station. The population of Edmond was about 394, by the year 1890. A syndicate referred to as the Seminole Town and Development Company prepared the original planning map for Edmond and named the streets after workers and other men connected with the Santa Fe Railroad and the township syndicate. The very first mayor and city officers were elected during May the year 1889.

Outside the U.S. Post Office within downtown Edmond stands a memorial to the victims of a tragic event within the city's history. The city of Edmond made national news in the month of August 1986 when it was the site of the post office massacre. An ex-postal employee named Patrick Sherrill killed 14 individuals and wounded 6. The crime resulted in a rash of postal employee murder-suicides throughout the nation.

Shannon Miller, the Olympic gymnast with 7 medals in the year 1992 and 1996 Olympic Games is from the city of Edmond. Shannon Miller is the nation's most decorated Olympic gymnast.
