Dayton (population 166,000) is a city in Ohio state, United States, and the county seat of Montgomery County. Dayton City sits within the Miami Valley region of Ohio, north of Cincinnati. With a Metropolitan Statistical Area population of 841,502 (2010 census), Dayton City is the 4th largest metropolitan area in the state of Ohio. Amongst Dayton's claims to fame is its place in history as the birthplace of aviation. Orville and Wilbur Wright, the inventors of powered flight, called Dayton home. The city of Dayton is notable for its industrial, research and aerospace companies that have produced several technical innovations. Dayton is sometimes called the "Gem City," a moniker derived from a 1845 newspaper article that noted the city's wealth, refinement and enterprise. Dayton's surrounding metropolitan area consists of Centerville, Beavercreek, Trotwood, Kettering and Vandalia. The city of Dayton is still a "gem", with its many restaurants, shops, spacious parks, sports facilities, sites of historical value, a thriving downtown district and lively arts community.

Dayton's thriving cultural scene includes theater, dance, music and visual arts.
