The city of Parma is home to major corporate offices, like for example GrafTech International (formerly Union Carbide Research Center), General Motors and Cox Cable Television.

In terms of residential development and commercially, the city of Parma boomed between 1950 and 1980. The city of Parma was really good at growing and attracting new businesses. A big retail center is the Parmatown Mall. The city made headlines during 2003 for the transmission line failure that triggered the 2003 Northeast Blackout.

The city was named by its first settlers, Benaiah Fay and his family, who migrated from the state of New York. They named the city after Parma, New York (which had been named after an Italian township). During the 19th century, the city was mostly an agricultural area. Incorporation as a village took place during 1924. The very first population boom took place after the end of World War II. Many Eastern European and Polish families from nearby city of Cleveland moved to the city Parma and built homes there.

Parma residents benefit from their nearness to the gorgeous Cuyahoga Valley National Park. Hikers enjoy the numerous trails, many of which are suitable for bicycle riding.
