Springfield City serves as the county seat of Clark County in the state of Ohio. Situated within the southwestern part of the state, the city of Springfield is thirty minutes northeast of Dayton and an hour west of the state capital, Columbus. The city is accessed by Interstate 70.

According to the 2007 US Census, Springfield City Metropolitan Statistical Area has a population that is nearly 135,000. The combined statistical area of Dayton-Springfield-Greenville, OH has almost 1,075,000 residents. A liberal arts college, Wittenberg University, is located in Springfield City.

During the year 1801, James Demint established the community of Springfield. The National Road helped to grow the town in its early years, though for the last ten years, the city of Springfield has had its terminus. Lots of prominent industrialists dominated the town, all through the latter part of the 19th century. Springfield City is where the Wright Brothers' patent attorney wrote the patent for the invention of the airplane, in the Bushnell Building. The Kelly Springfield Tire Company was established in the year 1894, followed by the growth of a thriving auto business. Ten automobile manufacturers had facilities within the city of Springfield between 1916 and 1926.

The city is located on the Mad River, Buck Creek and Beaver Creek. The Little Miami Scenic Trail offers good trails for cyclists and hikers. The paved rail-trail is about 80 miles long extending south from Springfield's Buck Creek Scenic Trailhead all the way to Newtown, Ohio. Various excellent trails consist of the Lakeview Trail and the Buchhorn Trail.
