The city of Elyria (population 54,533) is the county seat of Lorain County in the state of Ohio, United States. Elyria is situated at the forks of the Black River within the northeastern part of the state. The river winds through the town. The city's unusual name derives from the name of its founder, Heman Ely.

Elyria was established in 1817 after Heman Ely built a gristmill, a sawmill and a dam along the Black River. The township was named in honor of him when he donated a large area of land to the community. Elyria once was home to a lot of manufacturing businesses, like for example the Elyria Canning Company. A blow for local businesses came during 1967 when the Midway Mall opened, causing many shops to shut down. Elyria is home to Lorain County Community College.

The city of Elyria has a lot of parks and recreational areas that are named for their location within the city: South, North, West and East. All four recreation centers have tennis courts and ball fields. The major parks, Elywood and Cascade, are connected by a drive-on ford within the center. Cascade is the biggest and most popular park within Elyria. Winding through this park is the Black River. Located in a ravine carved by glaciers, Cascade park is a terrific spot for winter sledding. It has a big playground and a large hill where people gather to watch the fireworks during the Fourth of July.

Situated on the East Branch of the Black River are the double falls of the East Falls. It is located just down from the Washington Avenue bridge and is a popular attraction which was produced from the combination of a rock cliff and a dam. The East Falls once produced power for Elyria's "Red Mill." Near the East Falls, not far from the Police Station, lie the Ruins at East Falls. The site is the hydroelectric power plant remnants dating back to the early part of the 1920's, once operated by The Elyria Milling and Power Company. The power plant generated electricity for areas of Elyria.

A popular spot is Ely Square, where a gazebo, shade trees, picnic tables and benches form a picturesque and restful haven in the town center. Ely Square's fountain is the newest within a long line of remarkable fountains constructed here. This was once the site of the nation's first "electrified" fountain with multi-colored light displays that attracted lots of tourists.

Many Elyria residents make their way into Cleveland for employment, however Elyria does support the headquarters of Elyria Manufacturing Company, Diamond Products, Ridgid Tools, Bendix Commercial Vehicle Systems and Invacare.
