Mansfield (population 47,821) is located within Ohio State in the county of Richland. The city is located within Allegheny Plateau's western foothills in the north-central portion of the state. Cleveland lies towards the northeast about 130 km away. Mansfield is 106 km northeast of Columbus, Ohio.

The city is known as "The Heart of Ohio." The city's population has declined slightly (3.1%) over the past ten years. Based on the 2009 US Census estimates, the Mansfield, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area has a population of 124,490 residents, while the Mansfield-Bucyrus, OH Combined Statistical Area has a population of 167,893.

The Mansfield settlement dates all the way back to the year 1808, when it was named after Jared Mansfield, the U.S. Surveyor General who directed the town planning. After the railroad arrived during the year 1846, the township became a key manufacturing town. Stove manufacturing was a main business and Mansfield's largest employer was Westinghouse. With the decline of manufacturing within the area, Mansfield eventually became part of America's rust belt.

Within Ohio State, the city of Mansfield is based at the highest elevation of any city. The city of Mansfield has a lot of beautiful natural spaces situate in Allegheny Plateau's foothills. The city's outdoor recreation areas include Snow Trails Ski Resort, North lake Park, the Westbrook Country Club and Deer Ridge Golf Course. Bicycle riders could traverse among the most beautiful places within Ohio on the Richland B & O Bike Trail. Other popular places are Pleasant Hill lake and Mohican State Park.

The post secondary education institutions within Mansfield consist of the North Central State College, MedCentral College of Nursing and a regional campus of Ohio State University. Nearby are Ashland University and the College of Wooster.

After Mansfield's decline in heavy industry, the economy has relied on the industries of retail, healthcare and education. The largest company is part of the healthcare sector, the MedCentral Health System. Then again, there are still some manufacturing enterprises in Mansfield, including AK Steel, Newman Technology Incorporated, Hyundai Ideal Electric Company, Therm-O-Disc, Gorman-Rupp Company, Crane Plumbing and the Carousel Works. There are also three food processing companies, Stewart's Drive-In, Isaly Dairy Company and Jones Potato Chip Company.
