Situated in the Halifax Regional Municipality within the Province of Nova Scotia, the Township of Bedford has a present population of almost 17,000 people. It was an independent town from 1980-1996. The township of Bedford lies on the northwestern end of Bedford Basin, an extension of the Halifax Harbour. Bedford is situated at the junctions of Trunks 1, 2, and 7.

The history of Bedford began when Governor Edward Cornwallis organized the building of a road from the garrison at Halifax to the Minas Basin on the Bay of Fundy. In order to protect it, he hired a military officer (John Gorham) along with his Rangers to erect a fort on the coast of Bedford Basin. It was called Fort Sackville after the 1st Duke of Dorset, Lionel Sackville. The area all-around the fort became known as Sackville until the mid-1850s when it became Bedford.

On July 1, 1980, the township of Bedford was incorporated. 16 years later, the town of Bedford would amalgamate together with Dartmouth, Halifax, and Halifax County Municipality to form the Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM) for the municipal level of government however the place name still exist for 911, mail, legal, and other services.

Along the Bedford Basin waterfront, there is a well-known walkway starting at DeWolf park, and continues through the Bedford-Sackville Connector Greenway, a trail with crushed gravel which follows the Sackville River. There is a 25m pool indoors and smaller splash pool located at the Lions Park on Shore Drive. During the summer months there are many lakes great for swimming. The region's topography limits the possible places for soccer and football fields.

The township of Bedford is a well-established sailing community, and is home to the Bedford Basin Yacht Club and Marina. Its likewise the Basinview Bedford Street Hockey League/Championship's home.

The yearly Bedford Days festival has been held for more than 30 years in the township at the end of June. Nearly all of the events are held at Dewolf Park. There is an Opening Celebration, Rubber Duck Dash, Dog show, free pancake breakfast, Kid's Extravaganza, Scott Manor House Tea Party, Movies in the Park, a Canada Day Celebration and Kid's Triathlon.

The annual Light Up Bedford Parade moves through town along the Bedford Highway that starts from the Bedford Place Mall and finishes at DeWolf Park. At Dewolf Park, they have a hot chocolate stand, Christmas carol singing and feature various contests and prizes. At the conclusion of the parade, a Christmas Tree is lit.
