The city of Reno, Nevada has an existing population of over 220,000 individuals, making it the 2nd most heavily populated city in Nevada, with only Las Vegas being larger. The city serves as the seat for the County of Washoe. The city is located at the foot of the Sierra Nevada Mountains within a desert valley. Reno is near the city of Sparks. The Reno-Sparks metropolitan area, called Truckee Meadows by residents, has a population of around 400,000.

Recognized as the "Biggest Little City in the World", Reno's name has become synonymous with gaming, casinos and gambling. Harrah's Entertainment, that is a giant gaming corporation, had its beginning in the city. Tourism in the main industry in the city of Reno, with more than five million tourists each year. The hotel and casino industry is the major attraction. Other than tourism, the city of Reno has businesses related to electronics, computers, communications and financial services. Businesses located here manufacture products varying from cement to pet food.

As early as the 1850's, the first pioneers began settling in the Truckee Meadows. They were attracted to the valley with free flowing water of the Truckee River that flowed directly down from Lake Tahoe. Travelers traversing the California Trail stopped here as they followed the Truckee River westward towards the Sierras. Gold was discovered during the mid- nineteenth century, followed instantly by the discovery of silver, that resulted in a mining rush.

The city of Reno has a well-developed arts scene with collections being held at the Stremmel Gallery and the Nevada Museum of Arts. The downtown Reno Art District is the place to find shops, galleries, coffeehouses and restaurants. The Historic Reno Preservation Society provides tours of ancient rock art places and several historic locations. Reno's artistic and cultural organizations consist of the Reno Philharmonic Orchestra, the Reno Chamber Orchestra, the Nevada Opera, the Broadway Comes to Reno series and community theaters. A well-regarded cooking school, Nothing To It Culinary Center, provides classes.

Reno hosts community events each and every year, like for example a classic car convention known as Hot August Nights, and a motorcycle fan gathering and rally called Street Vibrations. There is likewise the Great Reno Balloon Race, the Reno Air Races, the Cinco De Mayo celebration, the Best in the West Nugget Rib Cook-Off within Sparks, and bowling tournaments.
