Durham is a city in the U.S. state of North Carolina and among the three corners of the Research Triangle, a research park. Durham City serves as the county seat of Durham County. A smaller portion of the city falls within Wake County. With a population of about 228,300, Durham is the 5th-biggest city in North Carolina state. Two main universities are located there: Duke University and North Carolina Central University.

The research Triangle Park is the site of more than 130 businesses. Moreover, there are an additional twenty research, office and industrial parks that surround the Triangle. Thousands of the areas inhabitants work in the research park. Corporate administration and the medical/health sector hires a large number of people within the region.

The Durham-Chapel Hill MSA has a population of 504,357 (2010 census). The Durham-Cary-Raleigh Combined Statistical Area has a population of 1,749,525 (2010 census).

Forbes Magazine has ranked Durham City, as the third best place to reside within the United States for careers and business. Duke University & Medical Center is the regions largest employer. The foundation of the city's economy is its health and medical related companies and high-technology companies. Vital businesses in these sectors operate within the biopharmaceutical, electronics and telecommunications fields. Plastics, textiles and chemicals are also significant. Companies like for instance Nortel, IBM and Glaxo Smith Kline employ thousands of local residents.

There is a broad range of activities related to music in Durham for visitors and residents to enjoy, ranging from symphony concerts to jazz and blues festivals. The American Dance Festival is an annual event. There are also the Gay and Lesbian Film Festival, art exhibitions and the Full Frame Documentary Festival. People benefit from a lively series of programs at the Carolina Theatre. Some of the finest restaurants are situated within the Ninth Street, Brightleaf, and University Drive areas. Culinary offerings are many and diverse.

In the Durham area, there is an abundant amount of outdoor recreation opportunities. The American Tobacco Trail is a 12-mile trail that runs from downtown to the county line. These trails are great from cycling, jogging and hiking. Eno River State Park is a popular location where tourists can enjoy rafting, canoeing, hiking, fishing and bird-watching. Horseback riding is offered at Crane Creek Ranch with its numerous acres of riding trails. Flat River is an outstanding place for boating, hiking, sailing, fishing and rock hounding.
