Chapel Hill, North Carolina is situated in the Orange County Research Triangle. The Research Triangle was created in the year 1959 and is made up of the city's of Chapel Hill, Durham and Raleigh.

Chapel Hill is a township of 57,233 situated within the north central portion of the state on the Piedmont Plateau. The town's total land area is 19.75 square miles based on the United States Census Bureau. Nearby is the state capital of Raleigh. Chapel Hill is home to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC-CH). It is the oldest state-supported university in the nation. UNC Health Care is also situated there.

Chapel Hill gets its name from the New Hope Chapel that was located on a hill in the center of the town. The name also serves as a reminder of the Church of England house of worship prominence in the region. The town already had a university by the time it was incorporated during the year 1819. The township's purpose was to serve the major university. 30 parcels of land along the eastern, northern and western fringes of the campus were designated for development to serve the university.

The Morehead Planetarium is amongst the biggest tourist attractions in Chapel Hill. This facility served as the training grounds in the Apollo, Mercury and Gemini missions. Another draw is the North Carolina Botanical Garden, the biggest natural garden of its kind within the southeast US. Museums featuring the history of the region include Ackland Art Museum, The Chapel Hill Museum, Orange County Historical Museum, Stone Center for Black Culture and History and Kidzu Children's Museum. Other places of interest are Coker Arboretum and Charles Kuralt Learning Center.

The Festifall Street Fair is a main festival held within Chapel Hill each month of October. It attracts at least 15,000 visitors, who come to celebrate the arts and music scene, activities for children and international foods. A highlight is the 100 local crafts people and artists and who display and sell their wares. Another October event is the Hargraves Fall Carnival.

There is plenty for the sports enthusiast to do in the city of Chapel Hill, since the city serves as the home to the University of North Carolina. The Tar Heels have claimed 37 team national championships within five different sports.
