The small city of Bay Roberts is situated in the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador, on the north shore of Conception Bay. The city of Bay Roberts is situated on the Bay de Verde Peninsula, which connects the town to a lot of the Provinces major markets, by land and by sea, allowing for continued growth to the local economy. Now, the city has a population reaching 10,000 inhabitants.

Fishermen from Europe were coming to Bay Roberts as early as the 16th century. Fishermen from Brittany and Normandy in what is now France fished the waters off the coastline of Bay Roberts in the early 16th century and named the harbour Baie de Robert. They built onshore fishing rooms where they dried and salted codfish. The fishermen from France came to the region due to its huge harbour, and flat rock beaches which they utilized for curing fish.

Most likely they began constructing fishing rooms near the end of Bay Roberts harbour within Bay Roberts East in such regions as Juggler's Cove. Then they moved to French's Cove and later to Mercer's Cove. Evidence of these European people can be found within community place names like for instance Priaulx Hill and in nearby names like for instance Spaniard's Bay and Port de Grave.

Bay Roberts offers year round shipping services through its huge port, that is the same in size to the harbour within St. John's and can accommodate the largest of ships. It is protected from ocean storms by Fergus Island at its entrance. The bay and harbour have clear shores, without rocks or headland protrusions. As a result of its wonderful features and size, it has been approved for anchorage by marine insurance businesses.

A lot of archaeological proof was left behind by those early settlers giving clues to their way of life. In areas like Mercer's Cove, clay pipes as well as other artifacts were found, while at least one vessel was lost in the harbour in the 17th century. Lots of ceramic vessels that came from a shipwreck during the 17th century have been recovered from the harbour. Many of these are nearly complete or complete. They comprise storage jars from the West Country of England and olive jars from Spain and Portugal.
