Missoula (population 66,788) is a city within the western part of the state of Montana. It is the second biggest city within the state and serves as the county seat of Missoula County. It is called the "Hub of Five Valleys" because of its location at the convergence of five mountain ranges. The larger Missoula Metropolitan Area has a population of roughly 109,299.

The City of Missoula was established in 1860 along the Clark Fork and Bitterroot rivers. It was originally called Hellgate Trading Post when it was part of Washington Territory. The settlement moved upstream to be nearer a convenient water supply that will allow the establishment of a flour and lumber mill. It was then known as Missoula Mills, and eventually just Missoula. The settlement supplied the occupants of Fort Missoula and settlers traveling west along the Mullan Road. The Fort was established during 1877 to provide security for settlers. In 1883 the Northern Pacific Railway arrived in the area, boosting the lumber industry and sparking the population growth. In the year 1893 the Montana Legislature chose the City of Missoula as the site for the new state's very first university. In 1908 the U.S. Forest Service established its head office within the city.

For over a century, higher education and limber would underpin the local economy. Aside from those industries, the City of Missoula is a regional trade center serving a trading region comprising about 180,000 people. The bigger trading area includes the western third of the state including 301,000 inhabitants. Vital industries of the local economy are education, health care, financial services, transportation, retail shopping, government/social services, arts, culture and events.

The university is Missoula's largest employer. The Community Medical Center and St. Patrick Hospital are the second and third largest employers. Health care is the fastest growing trade. Slightly more than half of all employment within the city comes from the service and retail sectors. Missoula produces a great deal of product for export, in the construction, engineering, transportation, forestry and beverage industries. Tourism is an important sector with approximately 4 million visitors arriving from out of state on an annual basis.
