Jackson is the most populous city and the capital of the southern Mississippi State in the USA. Of Hinds County, it is one of 2 county seats, whilst Raymond Town forms the other. Based on the Census of the year 2000 by the U.S. Census Bureau, the population of Jackson was roughly 184,260. It went down to around 173,500 according to the Census of the year 2010. The Jackson metropolitan area is an area with 5 counties which had population of 539,005 that same year. Jackson is the anchor of the Metro area.

The city gets its name from the former general and President of the United States, Andrew Jackson. "City with Soul" is the slogan for Jackson, Mississippi. Based on Forbes Magazine, out of the 100 biggest metro areas in America, it was placed 3rd for the best "Bang for Your Buck City." This study measured numerous factors such as housing rates and overall affordability, along with different other things. Additionally, the city of Jackson is placed as the 23rd most dangerous city in the USA based on the 14th yearly "City Crime Rankings: Crime in Metropolitan America."

It was way back during 1821 that the community was established. Known as "LeFleur's Bluff," the area was selected to be the location of the township that would later become the Mississippi state capital. In the year 1821, a legislative act authorized the location to become the permanent seat of government for the state of Mississippi. That same year it was decided to name Jackson, in honor of Major General Andrew Jackson. Afterward, this gentleman would become the 7th President of the nation.

The community became incorporated as a city after one year. During the Civil War, the city of Jackson became a target of Union troops. Jackson was burned and ravaged lots of times under the command of General William T. Sherman. The post war recovery of the area was slow. Jackson began to experience a sharp increase in population in the turn of the 20th century. It eventually became among the most dynamic growth regions in the Sunbelt.

In the 1930s industrial development was spurred by the discovery of natural gas close by. The city of Jackson became a scene of racial unrest throughout the 60s and the 70s. This destructive behavior was epitomized by the slaying of Medgar Evers, civil rights activist and NAACP leader during the year 1963, by a white supremacist. There have been many improvements in the following decades in the area of race relations. The members of the Jackson City Council unanimously voted in 2004 in honor of Medgar Evers by renaming the Jackson International Airport.

The city of Jackson is a hub for many recreational activities like for example music, fine cuisine and cultural attractions. Among the best places to go to is the Smith Robertson Museum and Cultural Center. This particular building is located very near the State Capitol building. It features art, artifacts and photography, celebrating the rich African American experience within the Deep South. The Museum is located in the former Smith Robertson School, that first opened during 1894. It was the first public school to be constructed within Jackson for African American student.

Among the best landmarks in Jackson is the Jackson Zoo. It attracts hundreds of thousands to tourists each year and has been in operation since the year 1919. There are more than 100 various species of animals on display and a lot of them are considered to be endangered. The Russell C. Davis Planetarium is another feature in downtown Jackson.
