Minneapolis, Minnesota serves as the county seat of the county of Hennepin and has been known as "Mill City" and "City of Lakes." The City of Minneapolis is the nation's 48th largest city and is the biggest city in the State of Minnesota. The name is derived from the region's very first schoolteacher. He combined the Dakota word water "mni" and the Greek word for city that is, "polis."

The city of Minneapolis is located on the Mississippi River banks. It lies just north of the river's convergence with the Minnesota River and adjoins Saint Paul, the state's capital. Minneapolis-Saint Paul is known as the "Twin Cities." They form the 16th largest area within the country. There are approximately 2.3 million inhabitants residing here.

The population of Minneapolis was just more than 383,000 inhabitants according to the 2010 Census. Situated within the city of Minneapolis are more than 20 wetlands and lakes. The creeks, waterfalls and Mississippi river make the area stunning. The Grand Rounds Scenic Byway and the Chain of Lakes interconnect a lot of the parkways in the city.

Minneapolis was previously considered to be the flour milling capital of the world and a hub for timber. Today, the city has become the main business center between Chicago and Seattle. There are various cultural groups within the city of Minneapolis which bring audiences to Minneapolis for visual art, writing, music and theatre. The city's diverse population has a history of tradition of many charitable support programs through the city in the form of corporate and private philanthropy and progressive public school programs.

Until the explorers from France arrived about the year 1680, the Dakota Sioux were the sole inhabitants in the area. In 1819, Fort Snelling was constructed by the U.S. Army. This new fort brought a big amount development in the region. The American government pressed the Mdewakanton band of the Dakota to sell their land and this particular deal, allowed people coming from the east to reside there.

The Minnesota Territorial Legislature authorized the existing Minneapolis as a township in 1856. Minneapolis was then incorporated as a city during 1867. That same year, rail service started between the cities of Chicago and Minneapolis. During 1872, it eventually joined with St. Anthony's east bank.

Today, the main economy of the city is centered on finance, commerce, trucking services, industry, rail services and health care. Other important aspects of the areas economy comprised the sectors of: insurance, food processing, graphic arts, high technology, milling and publishing. Electronics, automotive products, chemical and agricultural products, machinery, precision medical instruments and plastics are among the major parts of the industrial business. In the past, the city of Minneapolis was known for making farm implements.
