Fairview is a district situated on the west side of Vancouver, B.C. It extends to to False Creek in the north, Cambie Street in the east, to Burrard Street in the west and from 16th Avenue in the south.
Originally, the Fairview area like with the majority of Vancouver was initially a rich rain forest place. It had different wildlife and enormous lumber until the opening of the Hastings Mills and Moodyville on Burrard Inlet in the 1860s. This green paradise became amongst the very first places to be logged.
In the city, Fairview was one of the CPR land grants. The area stayed generally undeveloped until the expansion of the city past the Burrard Peninsula. This was because of a new electric railway system which was built during the 1890s.
The original streetcars within the city included the Cambie and Granville lines that ran along Broadway Street. Furthermore, there was a line referred to as the Fairview Loop, which ran in both directions from downtown up Main Street to Broadway, then making its way to Granville and back into the downtown core. This ease of access and consistent transportation led to quick development of the commercial and residential places within the neighborhood.
Fairview got its name from a portion of the region north of Broadway that has fine views of the downtown city core and the North Shore Mountains. On Fairview's eastern fringe, are several city offices situated across Cambie Street from Vancouver City Hall.
