Thompson is a city in northern Manitoba. As the "Hub of the North" it serves as the regional service and trade centre of northern Manitoba. Thompson is located 830 km or 520 mi north of the Canada/United States border, 459 mi or 739 km north of the provincial capital of Winnipeg, and is 396 km or 246 mi northeast of Flin Flon. Thompson has a population of 13,256 people, which likewise serves as a trade centre for an added 50,000 or so Manitobans. Therefore, it has all of the amenities and services which would be expected in a much larger, urban centre.

The first individuals to inhabit the district around Thompson include the Paleo-Indian hunters who moved through the region more than 8000 years ago. It wasn't until 1896, that Europeans came to the area to conduct geological surveys.

The history of modern Thompson began in 1956, when large amounts of ore discovered by utilizing an airborne electromagnetometer. This spawned ten years of mining exploration within the area. The village was founded during 1957 after an agreement with the Government of Manitoba and Inco Limited. Thompson is planned community and is named after Inco's chairman, John F. Thompson. The population has been estimated as high as 26,000 inhabitants prior to the recession during the 1970s.

Its leading local industry is the mining, milling, smelting and refining of nickel, with more nickel concentrates coming from Voisey's Bay, Labrador.

Apart from Vale Inco Ltd; Calm Air, Manitoba Hydro, MTS and the provincial government employ most of the people in the city of Thompson. A huge part are teachers and entrepreneurs as well.

Within Thompson, there are several offices for provincial and federal government agencies. Thompson has a big retail sector, providing such things as clothing for various ages, a pet store, jewelry stores, travel agencies, vehicle dealerships, and grocery stores.

The city of Thompson features two campuses for the the University of Manitoba's Faculty of Social Work and University College of the North.

For the entire Northern Manitoba district, Thompson is the main retail service centre. The city maintains three shopping centres, comprising the Thompson Plaza, the City Centre Mall and the Westwood Mall. During the 1980s, all three malls were completely rented and attracted popular chains nevertheless, more recently they have had difficulty fully leaseing all the spaces.

The city of Thompson built the Spirit Way during the year 2008. It is a two-kilometre or 1.25 mile walking and biking pathway with 16 points of interest. These points of interest highlight Thompson's heritage, art, industry, culture, scenery and geology. The pathway includes a large wolf mural painted by Charles Johnston, and is a reproduction of Robert Bateman's 1990 painting "Wolf Sketch".
