The area of the city of Portage la Prairie was 24.67 square kilometres or 9.53 sq miles. It is located roughly 43 mi or 70 kilometres west of Winnipeg and sits on the Assiniboine River, that flooded the town persistently until a diversion channel north to Lake Manitoba, the Assiniboine River Floodway, was constructed to divert the flood waters. The city of Portage la Prairie is surrounded by the Rural Municipality of Portage la Prairie.

The city of Portage la Prairie has the most sunny days throughout the summer months within all of Canada, according to Environment Canada.

The name is derived from the French word portage, which translates to carry a canoe overland between waterways. In this case the "portage" was between lake Manitoba and the Assiniboine River, over la prairie.

The city became a major transportation hub due to its nearness to the river and later, the location of the main lines of the country's national railways passing through the community, all within a few hundred meters of each other. This has made the city of Portage la Prairie amongst the most ideal places for railway fans to view trains.

The city is popular for its mature urban forest, thanks to the aggressive tree planting program devised by the local community. A collection of among the largest cottonwood trees within Canada line the west end of the main street called Saskatchewan Avenue, and, along with several other kinds, are existing throughout the city, and is also a huge agricultural region.

The local economy is mainly dependent on agriculture and supporting businesses. The city of Portage la Prairie is likewise home to Simplot and the McCain Foods potato processing plants, that provide French fries for Wendy's, McDonalds, and different other commercialized restaurant chains. Viterra, previously called Can-oat milling, one of the largest oat mills within the world, is also located in the municipality. The city of Portage la Prairie has developed into a regional retail service hub as large big box style stores have been recently locating on the borders of the city. A lot of small towns and Native reserves use this as their main shopping destination. Portage la Prairie is a farming city, with around 120 to 125 frost free days, and a USDA Plant Hardiness Zone of 3a. Agriculture is the major business of the city.

Portage la Prairie had a military airbase south of the community known as Canadian Forces Base Portage. It was established as part of the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan during Second World War and trained numerous pilots for military service from around the globe.
