Elgin is a city within Illinois situated on the Fox River 40 miles or 64 km northwest of the city of Chicago. It is located within the northern region of Illinois. The majority of Elgin City is located in the County of Kane and a part of Elgin crosses over into the County of Cook. Elgin City had a total population of 108,188 based on the 2010 census, making it the 241st largest U.S. city and the 8th biggest in Illinois.

Elgin City was first inhabited by Native American tribes in the past. After the Black Hawk Indian War of 1821, the region was settled by white people. Two brothers from New York, James T. Gifford and Hezekiah Gifford, established the city during April of the year 1835. They named it after the Scottish hymn, "Song of Elgin." In the year 1849, the Galena & Chicago Union Railroad entered the city of Elgin. The city of Elgin is where the Elgin Watch Company, the leading producer of watches within the USA is located.

The city was among the only northern Illinois cities to feature a riverboat casino in the 1990s. Even though the Grand Victoria Casino generated controversy initially, it has grown to be a proven source of income for the city. As of the month of March the year 2005, the casino has been attracting roughly 4 million people on an annual basis, making it the 5th most popular tourist attraction within Illinois. The Grand Victoria Foundation offers community grants to nonprofit societies within the city of Elgin. The casino has contributed an amount over $116.

Elgin City has a significant Laotian American community as the city has been the sister city of Vientiane, Laos' capital since the year 1967. Many Laotian Americans have opened up shops and restaurants contributing to the cultural diversity of Elgin.

The city boasts many parks and playgrounds, including Zayres Park, Wright Avenue Park, Channing Park and Wing Park. The Poplar Creek County Forest Preserve and the Elgin Shores County Forest Preserve also offers the cities visitors and residents lots of outdoor recreational opportunities. Other locations to go see comprise the Elgin Public Museum, the Elgin Fire Barn No. 5 Museum and the Elgin Area Historical Society Museums.

Numerous shopping places could be enjoyed including the Wing Park Shopping Centre, the Summit Square Shopping Center, Town and Country Plaza Shopping Center, Clock Tower Plaza Shopping Center, Tyler Creek Plaza Shopping Center and Fox River Plaza Shopping Center.

Lords Park is a fantastic place that sprawls more than 112 acres and includes a herd of American bison, a petting zoo and the Elgin Public Museum. Wing Park is an exciting 121 acres and includes a golf course. There are many golf courses including the Elgin Country Club, the Bowes Creek Country Club and the Highlands of Elgin.

Among the biggest municipal recreation centers within the country is the Centre of Elgin, which houses a climbing wall, and an aquatic park, among other features. The Elgin Sports Complex located on the Southwest side of the city offers The Hill BMX track, 10 soccer fields and 10 lighted ball fields. The Complex hosts many local, regional and national tournaments every year.
