Cedar Rapids is the state of Idaho's 2nd largest city. The city is located along both banks of the Cedar River, around 160 m or 100 miles east of Des Moines, the state's largest city and capital; and 20 miles or 32 km north of Iowa City. The city of Cedar Rapids forms the county seat of Linn County. The City Hall and the Linn County Courthouse are both situated on Mays Island within the Cedar River. The city of Cedar Rapids is situated within the core of the Interstate 380 Cedar Rapids/Iowa City Technology Corridor of Linn, Washington, Johnson, Benton and Jones counties. The city of Cedar Rapids forms the economic center of the state of Iowa and is a major center for art and culture in Eastern Iowa. Cedar Rapids is home to the Iowa Cultural Corridor Alliance, the Paramount Theatre, the National Czech & Slovak Museum & Library, the Cedar Rapids Museum of Art and the Theatre Cedar Rapids.

The city of Cedar Rapids has been called the "City of Five Seasons," for the 5th season, which is time to enjoy the other traditional four seasons. The city of Cedar Rapids symbolizes this with a Tree of Five Seasons sculpture along the north river bank within downtown. In a variety of forms, the representation of the sculpture and the name "Five Seasons" appear through Cedar Rapids in many ways.

The location of the present Cedar Rapids was in the territory of the Fox and Sac Tribes. Osgood Shepherd arrived in 1838 as the first permanent settler. Initially, when the town was first established, it was called Columbus by Mr. William Stone. Later on in 1841, it was renamed and resurveyed by N.B. Brown along with his associates. The new name of Cedar Rapids was named for the rapids in the Cedar River at the location. The river was named to honor the huge red cedar trees which profusely grew along its banks. On the 15th of January, the year 1849, the city of Cedar Rapids became incorporated.

There are numerous big businesses who call Cedar Rapids home. For instance, Cargill, GE Commercial Finance, General Mills, Quaker Oats, Archer Daniels Midland, Allient Energy and Rockwell Collins are some of the top companies. Rockwell Collins is the region's biggest employer. The company produces communication technology and aviation electronic technology for aircraft manufacturers, airline customers and for the government.

Within the area's Technology Corridor are lots of high-tech industries and companies. This region is a major sector in the nation's defense electronics business. The city of Cedar Rapids as a whole has more than 275 manufacturing facilities presently in operation. Food manufacturing and processing as well as agribusiness are essential parts of the economy. Telemarketing and telecommunications also offer a lot of jobs within the area. There are local companies specializing in system planning, equipment manufacturing and electronic design and manufacturing.
