Situated in Alberta, Canada, St. Albert city is situated on the Sturgeon River, northwest of the capital city, Edmonton. Initially, St. Albert city was a settlement of the Metis community, Nowadays, it is considered the 2nd largest of all the cities in the Edmonton area. St. Albert City, during the year 1904, received its "town status." By 1906 St. Albert city can be reached by the Canadian Northern Railway.

Back in the day, St. Albert was first separated from Edmonton by some miles of agriculture farmland. In the 1980s, Edmonton's city limits expanded and this placed St. Albert immediately adjacent to the larger city on St. Albert's east and south sides.

There are various recreational facilities and complexes found in St. Albert. Like for example, during the year 2006, St. Albert city built a $42.77 million dollar multi-purpose leisure centre which is referred to as Servus Credit Union Place. Within this complex there is a large recreational aquatic centre, a running track, the pre-existing Mark Messier and Troy Murray hockey rinks, a 2000 seat performance rink, 3 basket ball courts, a big exercise room with state of the art machines, 2 soccer fields and a kid's play area and a lot more.

During the year 2006, there was some heated controversy when the city announced they were renaming the Troy Murray and Mark Messier hockey rinks, and were going to offer these rights for sale. Together, the two rinks were called Campbell Arena. They were originally named after these local hockey legends in the year 1992, shortly after the arena opened. The debate was so large it even included an article in Sports Illustrated. The Mayor, Paul Chalifoux decided to repeal the decision. Ever since, the Campbell twin arena has since been added onto and has become part of the creation of the St. Albert Multi-Purpose Leisure Centre.

In the city, the various recreation facilities comprise Fountain Park Pool, Grovesnor Pool and many children's play areas, racquetball courts and tennis courts.
