Atlanta is the capital city of the state of Georgia, USA. As of 2010, the city of Atlanta had a population of around 420,000 residents making it the state's most heavily populated city. It is also the cultural and economic center of the Atlanta metropolitan area. This metropolitan area has 5,268,860 inhabitants residing within it, making it the 9th largest metropolitan area in the United States. Atlanta makes up the county seat of Fulton County and a small portion of the city runs eastward into the County of DeKalb. "Atlantans," are what inhabitants of the region are called.

In the year 1837, Atlanta City was first established as "Marthasville" at the end of the Western and Atlantic railroad line. In the year 1847, the location was officially incorporated as Atlanta. Throughout its start, the city of Atlanta was made up of several schools and hotels, a little more than 30 stores, a church and about two thousand five hundred inhabitants.

Within the state of Georgia, the city is situated within the north central area and is home to over 10 Fortune 500 companies. Amongst these companies comprise: the Coca Cola Company, Home Depot, UPS, and Delta Airlines. In the year 2005, the Atlanta metropolitan area was ranked third after Houston and New York on the list of cities with the most headquarters of Fortune 500 companies.

The city is a centre for the arts and is recognized for its rich and vibrant culture. There are numerous museums, symphony, a theatre, opera and the ballet, in addition to a presidential library. The areas best and most popular museums consist of: The Atlanta History Centre, The Atlanta Cyclorama and Civil War Museum, The Martin Luther King Jr. Centre for Nonviolent Social Changes, The Fernbank Museum of Natural History, the World of Coca-Cola Pavilion, The Atlanta International Museum of Art and Design, The Museum of Contemporary Art of Georgia and The Jimmy carter Library.

The area hosts a wide range of world-class performing arts attractions, like: The Shakespeare Company, The Atlanta Opera, The Atlanta Ballet, The Center for Puppetry Arts and other playhouses and theatres.

The workforce within the city of Atlanta is really skilled. Among the USA, it ranks 7th for the percentage of the population who have finished college.

The city of Atlanta regional centre for commerce and is known for trade shows and conventions. In addition, it is a key cable television programming center for CNN, The Weather Channel and the Cartoon Network and other networks. This airport ranks seventh in the USA as far as nonstop international travel goes according to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics and the U.S. Department of Transportation.
