Atlanta is the capital city of the state of Georgia, USA. As of 2010, the city of Atlanta had a population of around 420,000 residents making it the state's most heavily populated city. It is also the cultural and economic center of the Atlanta metropolitan area. This metropolitan area has 5,268,860 inhabitants residing within it, making it the 9th largest metropolitan area in the United States. Atlanta makes up the county seat of Fulton County and a small portion of the city runs eastward into the County of DeKalb. "Atlantans," are what inhabitants of the region are called.

In the year 1837, Atlanta City was first established as "Marthasville" at the end of the Western and Atlantic railroad line. In the year 1847, the location was officially incorporated as Atlanta. Throughout its start, the city of Atlanta was made up of several schools and hotels, a little more than 30 stores, a church and about two thousand five hundred inhabitants.
